With John “Jack” Bogle’s passing “American investors have lost the fiercest advocate they may have ever had.” So wrote Jason Zweig, the esteemed The Wall Street Journal columnist this week. We couldn’t agree with him more.
I have interviewed John Bogle numerous times over the years and he was relentless in his pursuit of a better deal for individual investors. He also didn’t care who he took on to achieve it and seemed to relish battling most of Wall Street’s leadership. His 1975 creation of the first mutual fund tied to an index, the predecessor to the Vanguard S&P 500 (VFINX) revolutionized Wall Street’s pricing structure and democratized access to investing. Mission accomplished!
